Abstract

Objective: To describe, through a case series, the chiropractic care of pregnant women presenting with pregnancy related musculoskeletal complaints and/or abnormal fetal presentation who desired a vaginal birth after Caesarean
(VBAC).

Clinical Features: This case series includes four multiparous pregnant women with a history of Caesarean delivery
who presented for chiropractic care during the second and/or third trimester of pregnancy. Common clinical features included low back pain, pelvic girdle or round ligament pain, sciatica, and abnormal fetal presentation identified by ultrasound. All women expressed a desire to avoid repeat Caesarean delivery and to pursue VBAC.

Intervention and Outcomes: Chiropractic care consisted primarily of the Webster Technique. Care was delivered
over multiple visits throughout pregnancy. No adverse events were reported. Across all cases, presenting
musculoskeletal complaints improved or resolved, abnormal fetal presentations corrected to vertex when present, and all women achieved vaginal birth following prior Caesarean delivery, including one home birth after Caesarean
(HBAC). Labor occurred spontaneously without induction in all cases.

Conclusion: We presented the successful chiropractic care of pregnant women presenting with musculoskeletal pain complaints and/or abnormal fetal presentation and the desire for VBAC. The women’s presenting symptoms and abnormal fetal presentations resolved and were able to give birth naturally (i.e., VBAC).
