Abstract
Objective: To discuss the management and resolution of medically diagnosed “failure to thrive” (FTT) in an infant following birth trauma from a nuchal cord.
Clinical Presentation: A 4-month-old female with a medical diagnosis of failure to thrive was evaluated in a chiropractic office. The infant was suffering from inconsolable crying, oral thrush, chronic diarrhea and was dangerously underweight. Chiropractic examination detected vertebral subluxations at C1-C4 and T3-T4.
Treatment and Outcome: The patient was treated with chiropractic adjustments for seven weeks. The FTT symptoms began to resolve after the first visit and completely resolved by the seventh week of care.
Conclusions: Failure to thrive was resolved in this infant following introduction of chiropractic care. It is possible that a relationship between a nuchal cord, cervical spine subluxation and failure to thrive exists. Further research could be beneficial.
