Abstract

Objective: To describe the positive health outcomes in a 31-year-old male following chiropractic care who was medically diagnosed with Bickerstaff Brainstem Encephalitis.

Clinical Features: A 31-year-old male patient presented to the chiropractic office with the medical diagnosis of Bickerstaff Brainstem Encephalitis, exhibiting the classical symptoms of confusion, ataxia and ophthalmoplegia, as well as dysphagia, dizziness, and depression. He had to use a feeding tube to eat.

Intervention and Outcomes: The patient was evaluated and adjusted using the Activator protocol. On the eighth adjustment the patient received manual cervical adjustment and after the 17th adjustment was switched to manual thoracic spine manipulations as well. After 12 adjustments, the patient no longer had dysphagia and his feeding tube was removed.

Conclusion: This case outlined a 31-year-old male who was diagnosed with Bickerstaff’s Brainstem Encephalitis. Further research is encouraged in this population of patients.
