Abstract

Responses to “Vertebral Subluxation Correlated with Somatic, Visceral and Immune Complaints: An Analysis of 650 Children Under Chiropractic Care” by Dr. Ogi Ressel and Dr. Robert Rudy, D.C.

“We read with much interest the paper entitled “Vertebral Subluxation Correlated with Somatic, Visceral and Immune Complaints: An Analysis of 650 Children Under Chiropractic Care” by Ogi Ressel BSc, DC, DACBR(C), FICPA and Robert Rudy BSc, DC, FICPA in the October 18, 2004 Issue of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research. We applaud the authors for their obviously massive task of retrospectively reviewing the charts of 650 children, but we must take issue with much of what is reported in this study. Although this letter could be destructively voluminous, we will keep our remarks to some of the most glaring examples of poor research design and interpretation. …”, Dr. Lawrence H. Wyatt, Dr. Robert Leach, and Dr. James Winterstein

Original Author Reply:
“I read the comments of Drs. Wyatt, Winterstein, and Leach regarding our paper, “Vertebral Subluxation Correlated with Somatic, Visceral, and Immune Complaints: An Analysis of 650 Children Under Chiropractic Care”, published by the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research on October 18, 2004, with great interest and amusement – thank you for sending their letter to me. I would like to thank them for not being “voluminously destructive,” as they put it. …” Dr. Ogi Ressel

Editor Response:
“I want to thank Drs. Wyatt, Leach, and Winterstein for submitting a critique of Dr. Ressel’s paper and I want to thank Dr. Ressel for responding. Dialogue is badly needed in the profession. Often, I hear back-room chatter from the various factions within chiropractic regarding the quality of the research that is published in the profession’s journals. Pompous statements are regularly made in the halls of the research chat rooms, the privacy of personal e-mails (you’d be surprised at what gets forwarded around) and the bathrooms at conferences. What I rarely see (and when I do, it is sparse) are Letters to the Editor that spell out cogent and professional critiques of the research that is published. ..” Dr. Matthew McCoy
